LED plant growth lighting system
Showa Denko K.K. produces LED Lighting Systems for horticulture by using in-house produced red (wavelength 660 nm) and blue LED chips (wavelength 450 nm). Showa Denko K.K. has also developed a new plant cultivation method, the Shigyo method, which can further increase plant factory harvest output.
Showa Denko K.K. succeeded in developing the world’s best output red LED chip (wavelength 660nm) in 2009. This wavelength is crucial for plant growth as it is essential for photosynthesis.
We have developed bar type LED lighting systems using our own, highly efficient LED chips, which includes red (wavelength 660nm) and blue LED chips (wavelength 450nm). This LED lighting system currently provides the world’s best luminous efficiency. Our LED lighting system can change the ratio of red and the blue freely. Compared to traditional fluorescent lamp lighting systems a plant factory can cut its electricity bill by half when using our LED lighting system.
This plant growth LED lighting system has successfully been tested with various kinds of vegetables, e.g. lettuce, spinach, herbs, baby leaf. We are constantly developing our system to include even further plants into our portfolio.

Showa Denko K.K. developed a new plant cultivation method using unique LED lighting recipes. It is called the Shigyo method, which was developed in cooperation with Prof Shigyo, Yamaguchi University.
This method provides an individualised light recipe to each crop; it varies the ratio of red and blue lights depending on the growth stage of the plant. Using Shigyo method, the fresh weight of the plant doubles compared to normal LED cultivation methods. This means that the plant factories using both our lighting system and cultivation method can increase harvests and sales substantially compared to traditional cultivation methods.
